Mattress Maintenance Tips: Four Things To Know

A mattress is an investment in your comfort and well being, which means you want to make sure that your new mattress is properly cared for. With the right maintenance and care, your mattress can deliver years of restful sleep. Here are some tips to help you keep your sleeping area in great shape.

Choose Proper Support

Some mattresses are designed for use with a foundation, while others can be used on a platform bed. As you look at the different options, talk to the salesperson about the level of support needed to maintain your mattress. Some models may require a box spring, as slat bases on some platform beds can cause springs to become damaged over time. You may even find that some higher end mattresses come with included foundations for easy setup.

Spot Clean And Freshen Regularly

You can use a fabric or upholstery cleaner to spot-treat the mattresses as needed. If someone spills a glass of juice on the bed, for example, remove the sheets and soak up the spill with a paper towel. Then apply upholstery cleaner according to the directions on the packaging. Be sure to wait unit the mattress is dry before placing fresh sheets on. To keep the mattress smelling its best, use a fabric deodorizing spray from time to time. You can also place scented dryer sheets between the sheet and mattress. This step can also help to prevent static cling in the dry winter months.

Apply A Waterproof Cover

You can avoid some damage to your mattress due to spills or stains by applying a waterproof cover. These covers slip easily over the mattress and can be secured by a zipper or snaps. People with allergies may prefer these covers, as they help to keep dust mites and allergens from becoming embedded in the mattress. You can also apply a similar cover to your box springs and even your pillows for added protection.

Turn Mattresses As Needed

Turning your mattress can help to prevent sag and allow for more years of use in your home. Depending on your needs, you may want to turn the mattress every month, every six months or every year. Check the manufacturer's handbook for guidance, and don't be afraid to turn the mattress more often if you feel that it is beginning to sag. Some people may find that they need to turn their mattresses more often than others, so find a schedule that works for you.

When you visit your local mattress store, ask if there are any special care instructions for the models you are interested in. Once you know how to properly care for your mattress, you can help ensure many restful nights of sleep to come.
